R-SGD Przybroda is an experimental facility of the Poznan University of Life Sciences which perfectly combines breeding, scientific, training and technical-economic tasks. The very wide range of fruit produced, covering almost all fruit species grown in Poland in an integrated manner, is sold in the company’s own shops. Surplus fruit is processed into juices and the fallout is directed to the farm’s own biogas plant, thanks to which the farm minimises its impact on the environment.

The growing population of increasingly affluent people and the associated increase in demand for food on the one hand leads to an increase in the need for food, especially fruit, which is to some extent a more expensive food, and on the other hand leads to an increase in environmental pollution and water shortages. At the same time, R-SGD Przybroda must strive to improve its financial performance and therefore minimise costs and work towards increasing the price of its fruit.

The breeding work carried out at R-SGD Przybroda in a sustainable manner (as evidenced by the certificates received each year) aims to obtain varieties that are highly adaptable to a changing environment, requiring lower input use while maintaining high yields. Production technology is also developed and improved, and is promoted through numerous conferences, training courses, practical demonstrations and seminars for growers, field advisers from agricultural-related institutions, students and teachers at horticultural schools, and allotment holders in the Wielkopolska region.

Alongside these activities, as part of its drive to improve its economic performance, it carries out measures to shorten its supply chain. To this end, in addition to its own shop at the farm’s headquarters and at the UPP, RSGD Przybroda has opened two of its own shops in Cerekwica and in Poznań, where the fruit produced on the farm can be purchased.

Orchard production is based mainly on planting apple and pear trees, cherry trees, plum trees, cherry trees, and also includes almost all species of fruit trees and bushes cultivated in our climatic zone, inter alia: peaches, nectarines, apricots, as well as blueberries, chokeberries, hazelnuts and walnuts. For orchard production, the farm has two modern cold storage facilities, allowing it to store the entire year’s fruit production. R-SGD Przybroda is certified annually for integrated production and sells healthy, vitamin-rich and very tasty fruit through its own network of ‘Czerwone Jabłuszko’ outlets.

In order to ensure the highest possible quality of the fruit at R-SGD Przybroda, from harvesting through storage to sale; a HACCP system has been implemented, consisting of continuous monitoring of the conditions in which the fruit is placed.

Since the 2010/2011 season, the farm has been producing Natural Cloudy 100% Apple Juice from fruit produced in its own orchard, which contains no water, sugar or preservatives. The juice is obtained using the pressing method and preserved only by means of a mild pasteurisation process, which preserves the natural taste and the full bouquet of vitamins, as well as fibre and other valuable substances contained in our fruit. The juices are stored in convenient ecological carton packs of the bag-in-box type, which retain their shelf life for six months from the date of production, and after opening the juice can be consumed for a fortnight.

The most important is the absence of intermediaries and the assumption of all margins, which allows for more profitable production and increased consumer confidence. Integrated production reduces costs and, at the same time, guarantees high quality fruit and juice.

SUCCESS FACTORS

Direct selling for increased profitability: By eliminating intermediaries and selling directly to consumers, R-SGD Przybroda secures higher prices for farmers than wholesale markets. This strategy significantly improves the profitability of orchard production while fostering a closer connection between producers and consumers. Direct sales also enhance transparency, allowing customers to buy fresh, high-quality fruit and juices with full knowledge of their origin and production methods.

Strategic localisation and consumer trust: The farm operates five dedicated sales points near both the farm itself and the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. This strategic location ensures high visibility, strong brand recognition, and increased trust among consumers. By maintaining a direct presence in the local market, R-SGD Przybroda strengthens customer loyalty and promotes a sense of community engagement in sustainable food sourcing.

Sustainable integrated production: The farm adheres to integrated production principles, which focus on reducing input use while maintaining high yields. By minimising the application of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, production costs are lowered, and fruit quality is enhanced. Consumers benefit from safer, healthier produce, free from chemical residues, while also enjoying fruits with superior taste and nutritional value.

Commitment to environmental sustainability: Environmental care is a key priority at R-SGD Przybroda. The farm operates its own biogas plant, which efficiently processes organic waste, including surplus and fallen fruit, into renewable energy. This circular approach not only minimises waste but also generates digestate, a natural and nutrient-rich fertiliser that reduces reliance on synthetic alternatives. By closing the loop on agricultural waste management, the farm significantly lowers its environmental footprint while promoting ecological farming practices.

Certified quality assurance: R-SGD Przybroda is one of the few farms in Poland that consistently holds an Integrated Production Certificate, reinforcing its reputation for high-quality fruit and responsible agricultural practices. This certification assures consumers that the farm adheres to stringent quality and sustainability standards, enhancing the credibility of its products. The farm also implements a HACCP system, ensuring continuous monitoring of harvesting, storage, and sales conditions to maintain the highest food safety and quality standards.
